History of Cumann na mBunscol An Cabhán

While Cumann na mBunscol activities were well established in many other counties, it wasn't until the early eighties that they were introduced to Cavan, albeit on a smaller scale. Paddy Gill and Philip Clarke organised skills competitions and Mini Sevens and continued in this vein for a period of about 10 years.

In 1993, following a visit from members of An Coiste Náisiúnta, Coiste an Chábháin was set up with a full compliment of officers and committee members and have been running a full range of activities since then.

Cathaoirleach appointed then was Nicholas Baxter with Paddy Gill as Rúna?cum Cisteoir.Competitions including Boys and Girls Football Leagues, Hurling and Camogie Leagues, Mini Sevens, Handball and Quizzes were run on a yearly basis. A booklet , containing all fixtures, rules and regulations and other important information was produced.

Inter county tournaments were organised for a two year period and proved quite successful. For a number of years now, teams representing counties participating in Ulster Senior Championship games are chosen from various schools throughout the county, play an exhibition game at half time during these championship games and have proved very popular with spectators .

On the occasion of the Co. Senior, Intermediate and Junior Championship Finals in Kingspan Breffni Park, Cumann na mBunscol-boys and girls- play exhibition games at half time and every school in the county, participating in Cumann na mBunscol activities, get an opportunity to provide players on these important dates in the football calendar.

Members of An Coiste attend meetings of Coiste Ulaidh and play an important part in organising events at provincial level. The county is always represented at National events organised by An Coiste Náisiúnta including AGMs, Annual Awards' functions and other important meetings.(Incidentally,Cumann na mBunscol an Chabháin won the overall national award for their fixtures booklet in 2001 and in 2006 received a merit for their revised fixtures booklet. Our website--www.cumanncabhan.org was awarded 3rd place in Annual Awards 2009) Coiste an Chábháin were priviliged to host and organise 2009 National AGM in Slieve Russell Hotel.
