Dernakesh N.S.claim Div.3 honours after close tussle with impressive Ballyhaise N.S. side

Dernakesh N.S claimed the Allianz Cumann na mBunscol Division 3 Girls football title, when they overcame a gallant Ballyhaise N.S challenge, in the 3G Pitch on Saturday afternoon last.

Dernakesh N.S opened the scoring two minutes into the contest when their captain Leah Cosgrove slotted over a neat point. Taragh Brady equalised for Ballyhaise N.S a minute later from a free to leave it a tied game.

Sarah Clarke and Cosgrove combined to set up Hannah McCann who split the posts to move Dernakesh back into the lead. Sarah Clarke who played a pivotal role in her side's display, shot two points in quick succession to leave it 0-4 to 0-1 in Dernakesh's favour, after nine minutes.

Taragh Brady reduced Ballyhaise's arrears to 0-4 to 0-2 a minute later, with a point, from play. Bernadette Moore started an attack that was worked through the hands of McCann, with Jasmine Liken supplying the finishing touch, to leave it 0-5 to 0-2 with 13 minutes gone.

Dernakesh' s Ciara Fitzpatrick was foiled a certain goal in the 14th minute when Grainne Boyle made an excellent save in the Ballyhaise goal. Taragh Brady was impressing for Ballyhaise in her wing forward berth and she raised her team's third white flag of the half with 15 minutes on the clock.

Liken and Aoibhe Morris tagged on a point apiece for Dernakesh to move them into a 0-7 to 0-3 lead. Chloe Reilly burst through from her midfield berth, to dissect the uprights and close Ballyhaise's deficit to 0-7 to 0-4, with 18 minutes gone.

Dernakesh ended the first half superbly firing in 1-1. Leah Cosgrove pointed from play in the 19th minute and a minute into first half injury time they struck for a goal. Morris played a superb pass into Hannah McCann who finished with composure to the Ballyhaise net. This ensured that Dernakesh carried a 1-8 to 0-4 lead into the half time break.

Liken who had a fine game for Dernakesh, fired over the first point of the second half four minutes in to further extend her school's lead. Lucy Jane Grant pointed from a free for Ballyhaise before Cosgrove added another classy point for Dernakesh to leave it 1-10 to 0-5 with 29 minutes played.

Sarah Clarke tagged on two points in the 30th and 33rd minutes for Dernakesh, the latter point coming after playing a quick one-two from a free, to leave her side with a commanding 1-12 to 0-5 advantage.

Ballyhaise N.S began a stirring fightback to close the gap down from ten points to three. At the heart of their comeback were the duo of Lucy June Grant and Taragh Brady who were both excellent. Taragh Brady fired over a 34th minute point after being assisted by Grant. Lucy Jane Grant smashed in a Ballyhaise goal in the 36th minute and added a point a minute later to leave Ballyhaise trailing by 1-12 to 1-7.

Taragh Brady and Lucy June Grant both added a point apiece for Ballyhaise to cut Dernakesh's lead to 1-12 to 1-9. Dernakesh closed out the win however, with a Sarah Clarke free and a point from play from the same player, to seal a five point success in the Allianz Cumann na mBunscol Division 3 Girls decider.
