Dernakesh N.S 0-1
The Vale N.S 0-0
Dernakesh N.S edged out The Vale N.S by the narrowest of margins after extra time to lift the Allianz Cumann na mBunscol Division 2 Camogie title when the two sides met in the 3G Pitch, Kingspan Breffni Park.
The first half saw the Vale quite dominant in terms of creating chances with four wides to Dernakesh's two first half wides. The Vale N.S Captain Grace Leddy was very unfortunate not to score a goal for her side, in the 13th minute when she flashed the sliothar, just wide of Caitlin Rice's goal.
Both sides defended excellently throughout the entirety of the game, with very little space afforded to both sets of attacking players. The chances that were sent wide were done so as a result of intense tackling.
Whilst the Vale N.S slightly shaded the first half exchanges, Dernakesh N.S were on top, in the second half of the match. Ciara Fitzpatrick, the Dernakesh joint captain alongside Sarah Clarke, was very unlucky in the second half. She had five shots on the Vale N.S goal, only to see all five of her attempts, drift wide of the target.
The best chance came in the 24th minute for Dernakesh N.S to open their account, when Fitzpatrick saw her goalbound attempt, arrow just wide of the target.
The Vale's Aoife Moore and Rebecca Brady battle against Sarah Clarke and Ciara Fitzpatrick, was a great tussle around the middle of the field with the duo's from both schools performing very well, in both attack but more predominantly defence.
The Vale N.S had their chances too near the end of the second period to seal victory, but they couldn't penetrate a very resolute and determined Dernakesh N.S rearguard.
As a result of the two teams being inseparable after 30 minutes at 0-0 apiece, the match went into two five minute periods, of extra time.> Ciara Fitzpatrick scored the opening point of the match in the first minute of extra time, with a sublime long range point that sailed sweetly, over the black spot of the Vale N.S crossbar.
The Vale N.S's determination to get themselves back into contention was obvious, but unfortunately for them they couldn't find a way past a granite Dernakesh N.S defence.
Rebecca Brady sent a free just wide for her side and hit another wide from a 45 to ensure that the half time score in extra time read Dernakesh N.S 0-1 to the Vale N.S's 0-0.
Fitzpatrick and Clarke hit a wide apiece in the second period of extra time for Dernakesh whilst the Vale N.S were off target once. The Vale N.S ran out of time to find that vital equaliser and so the long whistle sounded to joyous scenes amongst the Dernakesh N.S players, management and supporters.
Both teams deserve enormous credit for serving up such an excellent spectacle in this Allianz Cumann na mBunscol Division 2 Camogie final encounter. Whilst there was only one score in the 40 plus minutes of action, there was no lack of skill, commitment, exquisite defending and endeavour on show that kept the exuberant crowd entertained throughout.
